Three categories of harmonic function
Tonic, predominant, dominant.
Tonic
I
Predominant
IV, VI, ii
Dominant
V, vii
Tonic substitute
When V moves to vi, vi acting as a false tonic.
Dominant substitute
When iii substitutes for V, only when the deceptive chord shares two common tones with the triad it is substituting.
Interrupted Period
1) T-PD-D, HC finish
2) T-PD-D-T, PAC finish
Continuous Period
1) T-PD-D, HC finish
2) D-T, PAC finish
Prolongation
Extending a chord/harmonic area with slight deviations in the chord.
Dominant Prolongation
Prolongation of V.
Pedal Prolongation
Prolongation with no movement in the bass.
Incomplete Neighbor Prolongation
Prolongation involving an appoggiatura or escape tone in the bass line.
Chordal Skip Prolongation
Prolongation through a change of inversion, not chord.
