What type of epithelium lines the oral cavity?
Stratified squamous epithelium
What are the characteristics of lining mucosa?
Soft, moist, stretchy
Where is lining mucosa found?
Lips, cheeks, floor of mouth, ventral tongue, soft palate
What are the characteristics of masticatory mucosa?
Firm, rubbery
Where is masticatory mucosa found?
Hard palate, attached gingiva, dorsal tongue
Where is specialized mucosa found?
Dorsal tongue
What is the main function of keratinocytes?
Produce keratin
How many layers does nonkeratinized epithelium have?
3 layers (basal, intermediate, superficial)
What are the characteristics of orthokeratinized epithelium?
Fully keratinized cells with no nuclei
Where is orthokeratinized epithelium seen?
Masticatory mucosa
What is a characteristic of parakeratinized epithelium?
Superficial cells retain nuclei
Where is parakeratinized epithelium seen?
Attached gingiva and some tongue areas
What is the function of the basal layer?
Mitosis occurs
What is another name for the prickle layer?
Stratum spinosum
What do granular layers contain?
Keratohyaline granules
What happens in the keratin layer?
Keratin squames shed
What are Fordyce spots?
Misplaced sebaceous glands in the oral mucosa
What causes linea alba?
Hyperkeratinized line on buccal mucosa from occlusion
Where is mucoperiosteum seen?
Hard palate and attached gingiva
What are exostoses?
Bony growths usually on facial surface of maxilla
What is ankyloglossia?
Tongue-tie: short lingual frenum limiting movement
What are the two layers of the lamina propria?
Papillary and dense layers
Name the types of lingual papillae.
Filiform, fungiform, foliate, circumvallate
What are the components of a taste bud?
Supporting and taste cells
What type of salivary glands are Von Ebner glands?
Serous salivary glands
What is the purpose of the Von Ebner glands?
Flush taste pores
What causes geographic tongue?
Benign condition with red/white patches due to changing filiform papillae
What causes black hairy tongue?
Lack of shedding of filiform cells buildup of keratin
What is fissured tongue?
Grooves on dorsal tongue: unknown cause but likely genetic
What is the lingual tonsil?
Lymphoid tissue on posterior dorsal tongue
What type of tissue are on either side of the mucogingival junction?
Border between attached gingiva (pink, keratinized) and alveolar mucosa (red, nonkeratinized)
How long does it take for the junctional epithelium to turnover?
4 to 6 days
How long does it take for the hard palate to turnover?
24 days
What structure does the basal layer of oral epithelium produce?
The basal lamina of the basement membrane
How long does a taste bud take to regenerate?
About 10 days
What part of the tongue contains the most taste buds?
Circumvallate papillae
Which oral tissue type has the fastest turnover time?
Junctional epithelium
Which lingual papillae are most common and do NOT contain taste buds?
Filiform
Which structure divides the tongue into anterior 2/3 and posterior 1/3?
Sulcus terminalis
