What caused political deadlock in 1841?
1841- The Act of Union unites the two Canadas and gives them equal representation in elected assembly.
What is Political Deadlock?
Government decisions cannot be made because each side blocks the other from advancing any agenda.

CW had almost 300k more people than CE. So, George Brown (CE) advocate for representation based on population.
-CE saw this as a threat of assimilation

Trent Affair
1861: American warship stops British mail ship Trent, returning to Britain with two Confederates. Americans take the confederates despite it being neutral waters. Britain threatened in retaliation. President Ab freed prisoners.
What was the aftermath of the Trent Affair?
Some Americans wanted revenge on Britain and its colonies.
Britain dispatched 14,000 troops to Canada.
-Ineffective transport caused delay, USA didn’t even attack so literally WHY.

-1864: Confederate soldiers attack St. Alban’s Vermont using Montreal as a base.
-Fled to Canada after like wussies
-British officials arrested then released them
-Union solders were mad they were released and threatened to fight

What were the Fenian Raids?
1859: Irish AYO EDIBRI called the fenians in the USA promoted Irish liberation from British control and wanted to capture BNA colonies for ransom.
1866-1871: Attacks agains NB, Canada West, and Manitoba. Colonies needed to unite
ASAP.
What is the significance of the reciprocity treaty?
1854: Free trade on timber, grain, coal, livestock, and fish. Influenced by economy and USA pressure made Britts agree to this.
What was the significance of the reciprocity treaty ending?
1866: Britain canceled treaty in hopes to damage BNA economy and force union. Further emphasized importance of centralizing economy within countries.
What was the BNA act?
1866: Confederation delegates from CW/CE, NS, NB met in London to present constitution aka BNA to britt gov, SUCCESSFUL, PASSED.
When was BNA signed and who signed it?
Queen Victoria signed BNA on March 29, 1867, EFFECTIVE JULY 1ST 1867. AY AY AY AY CANADA DAY DOMINION OF CANADA EXISTING!
