Followed the middle ages, began in the 14th century in Italy, and housed the beginning of the age of exploration.

Caravels

A type of light sailing ship used by Spanish and Portuguese sailors for large journeys during the Age of exploration.

Cartography

Art and science to map geography areas, with added interest due to the New World.

Astrolabe

An early tool/instrument used to tell time, navigate, and map the position of stars.

Magnetic Compass

Worked in almost all conditions, made near the 12th century, used to find direction (North, East, South, West).

Three G's

Gold indicates the search for riches, God represents the mission to spread Christianity, and Glory represents fame and legacy.

Christopher Columbus

Sailed for Spain, made first known European contact with the Americas, and stepped onto what is now the Bahamas when trying to find Asia.

From Portugal but sailed for Spain, first European to cross the Pacific Ocean, conceptualized circumnavigation but died before he could see it.

The act of sailing around the world, think circumference.

Globalization

The act of something being widespread around the globe, involving, converting, or affecting the entire world.

A supply of something like water that someone can use and also owns/has.

Explorer who published a book about his journeys, Italian from Venice, traveled along the Silk Road.

Founder of the Portuguese Empire who explored Africa's coasts.

Reached the Cape of Good Hope in Africa via sea, traveled from Portugal.

Sent to sail around the southern end of Africa and eastward to India/Asia, first European to find an ocean route to India.

World's largest continent and most populated continent.
