satire
A work that reveals a critical attitude toward some element of life to a humorous effect. It targets human vices and follies, or social institutions and conventions.
comic relief
When a humorous scene is inserted into a serious story, in order to somewhat lighten the mood.
Colloquial
Ordinary or familiar type of conversation. Colloquialism is a common or familiar type of saying.
Jargon
The dictation used by a group which practices a similar profession or activity.
Vernacular
Language of a particular county, region, or everyday speech.
Adage
A folk saying with a lesson. Example: A rolling stone gathers no moss.
Allegory
A story fictional or non fictional, in which characters, things, or events represent qualities or concepts.
Aphorism
A terse statement that expresses a general truth or moral principal. Ex: a watched pot never boils.
Understatement
The ironic minimizing of a fact, presents something less significant than it actually is.
Anaphora
Repetition of a word, phrase, or clause at the beginning of two or more sentences or clauses in a row.
Chiasmus
When the same words are used twice in succession, but the second time the order of the words is reversed.
antithesis
Two opposite or contrasting words, phrases, clauses, or ideas with parallel structure. Ex: It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
parody
an imitation of the style of a particular writer, artist, or genre with deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.
