  • padre e hijo

  • español e inglés

Exceptions:

1) If the next word starts with hi- but the i is not pronounced:

  • agua y hielo (the h is silent, but the sound is ye-)

2) If the next word starts with ie / ia (different sound):

  • pan y hierro

3) If y is at the beginning of a sentence:

  • Y inglés es importante hoy en día.

Desde vs Hace vs Desde hace

Desde = since / from

  • Focus = starting point (a moment in time)

  • Ex: Desde ayer estoy cansada

Hace = ago

  • Focus = how long ago something happened

  • Ex: Llegué hace dos horas.

Desde hace = for (and still)

  • Focus = duration from the past until now

  • Ex: Estudio español desde hace siete años.
