Too simplistic
Too simplistic especially in its view as STM as a single store.
Shallice & Warrington (1970) found patient KF had severely impaired STM but relatively intact LTM suggesting STM is not a unitary system
Led Baddeley & Hitch (1974) to propose working memory model which divides STM into multiple components
Assumes one-way flow of information from short-term to long-term memory
Logie (1999) argued that processes in STM often rely on information retrieved from LTM
This shows that memory functions are interactive rather than sequential
Focuses on structure rather than function
Ignores factors like meaning and motivation
Studies of HM (Scoville & Milner, 1957) showed that while he could not form new LTM, he could still learn some procedural tasks suggesting that rehearsal is not the only route to long-term storage and different memory systems exist beyond what MSM suggests
