Atrial Septal Defect (ASD)
An abnormal opening in the interatrial septum.
Ostium secundum
Located in the mid-portion of the interatrial septum, associated with hemodynamic mitral valve prolapse.
Ostium primum
A defect located at the inferior portion of the interatrial septum, associated with a cleft mitral valve.
Sinus venosus
A defect located in the posterior and superior portion of the interatrial septum, near the entrance of the superior vena cava.
Common atrium
Characterized by absence of the interatrial septum, associated with Ellis-van Creveld syndrome.
Shunt
Predominantly left-to-right, with a brief reversal during atrial relaxation.
Eisenmenger's syndrome
A complication of ASD that leads to pulmonary hypertension.
Cyanosis
A physical examination sign indicative of decreased oxygenation, often related to pulmonary hypertension.
Holosystolic murmur
A type of murmur heard at the cardiac apex associated with cleft mitral valve or tricuspid regurgitation.
Transcatheter closure
A minimally invasive technique for closing an ASD using devices guided by imaging.
Pulmonary arteriovenous fistula
A condition that may be indicated by contrast appearing late in the left atrium after a peripheral injection.
Saline contrast examination
A technique used to determine the presence of an ASD by observing contrast entry into the right atrium.
