God commands Elijah to anoint Elisha as the next prophet

Joel 2:27-29

God promises to pour his spirit on all flesh

• God makes a prophecy that something supernatural is going to happen

Isaiah 11:1-5 - Star Verse

A descendent of Jessie, of David, will have the gifts of the spirit

• A Messianic prophecy about the Messiah, the New David

• First time all of the gifts of the spirit were mentioned

Luke 4:16-21

In this passage Jesus identifies as the Messiah fulfilling the prophecy of Isaiah

• Identifies himself as the “anointed one”

• Jesus is revealing himself to the people

• Christ is priest, prophet, & king

Mark 14:1-9

Jesus is anointed by Mary Magdalene a week before his death

• Jesus receives the gift of anointing completes the idea that he is the anointed one

• Jesus takes on the 3 roles (priest, prophet, king)

John 14:15-31

Jesus promises his Apostles to leave them with a councilor (The Holy Spirit)

• One of the prophecies of Christ taking on the role of a prophet that will be fulfilled

Acts 2:1-13

Describes Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended on Mary & the Apostles

• This Passage is a fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy & Jesus’ prophecy in John

Acts 8:14-17 - Star Verse

Peter & John lay hands on the Christian of Samaria to receive the Holy Spirit after Baptism

• Receiving of the Holy Spirit is a distinct act from Baptism

Acts 19:1-7 - Star Verse

Paul lays hands on 12 men so they can receive the Holy Spirit after being Baptized

• Receiving the gifts of the Holy Spirit is separate from Baptism

• Further fulfillment of Joel’s prophecy

Romans 12:6-9

Paul tells christian to use gifts which they are given
