Prions
Infectious agents composed of misfolded proteins that can induce abnormal folding in normal proteins, leading to neurodegenerative diseases.
Virus
Non-living, submicroscopic agents that are typically made up of a DNA/RNA core surrounded by a protein coat. They require a host to replicate and cause various diseases
Bacteria
Single-celled prokaryotic microorganisms that can exist independently or in colonies. They have a simple structure, lacking a nucleus, and can be found in diverse environments, some of which can cause diseases.
Protists
Living microscopic single-celled eukaryotic animal-like organisms. They infect the digestive tract, blood and organs depriving the host of essential nutrients. Get it by consuming contaminated food or water.
Fungi
living multicellular eukaryotic organisms like yeast and mushrooms
Helminths
living, multicellular eukaryotic worms which deprive the host of essential nutrients.
Pathogen
a disease cussing organism
Mucus
a secretion of the mucus membranes in membranes that cover cells that line our respiratory and digestive tracts to trap pathogens
Epidermis
First layer of skin. Provides a barrier makes, new skin, and determines skin color
Dermis
The middle layer of skin that contains collagen and elastin, grows hair, makes oil+sweat and contains blood vessels+nerve endings
Subcutaneous fatty tissue
The bottom layer of the skin that consists of fat that cushions muscles and bones as helps regulate body temperature.
Inflammation
when a part of the body becomes reddened, swollen or hot. Normally in reaction to infection or injury
Sepsis
the body's immune system overreacts to infection causing inflammation
Severe sepsis
organs in the body begin to malfunction, blood pressure is low and inflammation continues
Septic shock
extremely low blood pressure that doesn't respond to IV fluids
TIME principle
T- temp is higher or lower than normal
I- signs and symptoms of infection
M - mental decline
E - extremely ill
Lymph nodes
