Isotonic Exercise
Involves movement and work
The muscles being exercised shorten and lengthen
Aerobic: example of isotonic exercise: promotes cardiorespiratory conditioning and increases lean muscle mass
Isometric Exercise
Stationary exercise during which there is no change in length of the contracting muscle; usually against resistance
Repeatedly tensing and relaxing muscles
Increases muscle mass and strength
Improves circulation but does NOT promote cardiorespiratory function
Isokinetic Exercise
Combines movement at a constant speed with a form of resistance
The speed and resistance is preprogrammed and controlled with a machine
Often used for rehabilitation
Therapeutic Exercises
Activity performed by people with health risks or those being treated for an existing health problem
-Prevents complications and restores lost function
-Isotonic or isometric
*For isotonic, may be active or passive exercise
Continuous Passive Motion Machine
Mechanical device powered electrically as a supplement or substitute for manual ROM- clients with burn injuries or knee'/hip replacement surgery
Produces 0*-110* motion, 2 to 20 times a minute
Initial setting is very low and is increased each day
ROM exercises
Flexion, extension, hyperextension, abduction, adduction, rotation, external rotation, internal rotation, circumduction, pronation, supination, plantar flexion, dorsiflexion, inversion, eversion
