What is a community?
A community is a group of people who are in close contact and share common interests and values.
What is a neighbourhood?
A neighbourhood is a local area within which people live as neighbours, sharing living space and interests.
Give an example of a person being from many communities?
For example, a multicultural city like London, where people of different religions, cultures, etc. celebrate various festivals, example Eid, Christmas, Diwali.
Your community can being two: (give 2 examples)
1- Your religion, example, if you are a Muslim, you can belong to the Muslim community.
2- It can also be who you support in sports. Example, if you support Liverpool, you are from the Liverpool football community.
Why may someone be part of more than one community?
Because they take part in different areas of life, for example, hobbies, religion, sports, schools, habits, etc.
What is emigration?
Emigration is leaving your homeland to live in another country.
What does it mean by ethnicity?
Ethnicity is someone’s cultural background
What does it mean by census?
Census is an official count of the population to find out about the changes taking place.
What does it mean by immigration?
Immigration is coming to another country to live there
What is the difference between emigration and immigration?
Emigration and immigration is the same thing, but some countries have different terminologies.For example UK entering is called immigrant, while Australia entering is called emigrant.
Give three recent examples of migration (uk)?
1- 1945 to 1949, Polish servicemen for the Allies: thousands were resettled in the UK. The reason being they had helped and fought for Britain in World War II and couldn’t safely return to Poland, so helped rebuild the UK.
2- 1947 to 1955 Indian migrants: Thousands escaped conflict after the India-Pakistan partition. This was because India-Pakistan split leading to violence and Indians migrated to the UK for safety and work opportunities.
3- 2004, Eastern European immigrants: EU expansion brought over a million immigrants. This was because EU allowed free movement (freedom to live in any EU country without permission). So a person from a European country, for example Poland, can move to the UK for work opportunity.
Why do people move to Britain?
1- For safety
2- For studying
3- For family
Question- Describe the changes of ethnicity of the uk?
In 2001, the white population of the UK was 91%, and in 2011 it was 86%. In the same time period, the Indian, the Pakistani, and the African population increased.
(Basically white population decreased and others had increased)
Question-Explain two reasons why the uk is a culturally diverse society?
1- Migrants from all around the world: People have moved to the UK from many different countries for work, study and safety. These changes have brought in many different languages, foods, religions and traditions.
2- Historically linked to the British Empire and the Commonwealth: Because Britain once ruled many countries, it kept strong connections with them. After World War Two, people from the Commonwealth countries were invited to help rebuild Britain, which increased the cultural diversity.
What is it meant by minority and give an example?
A minority is a small group from a large group of people. For example, Muslims in the UK are a religious minority because most people in the UK are Christian or have no religion.
What is tolerance?
Tolerance means accepting and respecting of other people’s beliefs, opinions and cultures, even if they are different to yours.
What does the 2011 consensus state compared to the 2001 consensus?
1- In the 2011 census of the UK, the number of Christians have gone down to 59.4% compared to 2001 of 71% Christians (11.6% downfall for Christians)
2- With the same 2011 consensus and 2001 consensus, the amount of Muslims have increased from 3% to 5%. (2% increase
3- There has also been small increases in other minority groups. For example Hinduism
What does the deceleration of human rights say? Give an example of it being broken.
In the Declaration of Human Rights, it says a person is allowed to follow any religion that he/she wants or no religion at all.
(An example of it being broken-a case study) There was an incident in Bradford of a Muslim man turning Christian, and other Muslims and his family, because of him turning Christian, turned on him. They attacked him, resulting in him being in hospital. This went against the human rights law. (Also people threatened the man that they would burn his house if he never went back to Islam.)
Explain the changes in religious beliefs in the uk?
1- Declining in Christianity: many people before 2001 in the UK had identified as Christians, but the 2011 census showed us the decline of the religion. (11.6% decrease)
2- Rise in other minority groups: Other minority groups like Muslims have increased from 2001 to 2011 by 2% (from 3% to 5%)
3- increase in other minority groups, for example Hindus
Asylum seeker?
Someone who has left their country and asks another country (like the UK) for protection from danger (if their request becomes accepted, they become a refugee)
Commonwealth?
The Commonwealth is a group of countries with historical links to Britain that cooperate and maintain special connections with the UK.
Economic migrant?
An economic migrant is a person who moves to another country mainly to find work or improve their standard of living.
European Union (Eu)?
The European Union is a group of European countries (27 of them) that works together for political manner, trade, and free movement for citizens.
Refugee?
A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their country because of war, danger, etc. And is granted protection from another country, like the UK.
Why has the uk population increases a lot? (3 points)
Because of:
1- Babies used to die at a young age in the early 20th century, but today the survival rate is much higher.
2- There is better healthcare now, so people are living longer.
3- Migration: the number of immigrants has increased post-World War II due to rebuilding the UK and therefore increase in population.
What are the sources of migrants?
1-Commonwealth countries: post WW2 they were to rebuild the country and there were many job opportunities.
2- European Union (EU countries): Due to free movement (freedom to live in any European country without permission)
Question- Explain using an example one way the population is changing?
The UK population is changing because of migration. Its impact is increasing UK population as new cultures and diversity.
Question- Argue wether refugees should be allowed in the uk?
For refugees living in the uk:
1- Protection from danger: refugees have fled war and persecution and the UK is able to provide safety.
2- Economic contribution: Many refugees work, pay taxes and fill job shortages, which benefits the UK.
3- Cultural diversity- it brings new languages, food and traditions into the uk
Against refugees living in the uk:
1- Pressure on public services: An increase in population puts pressure on schools and healthcares.
2- Security concerns: They maybe worries about ensuring all refugees are proper safe and not dangerous.
3- Challenges: Refugees can struggle to adapt and learn English or even find work
Economy?
Economy is the way a country manages its money, jobs, businesses and resources to meet the people’s needs and wants.
Entrepreneur?
Entrepreneur is a person who starts and runs a business, taking financial risks in the hope of making a profit.
Diversity?
Diversity means the variety differences of people in society. It could include religion, culture, gender, age, language, etc.
Integration? With an example
Integration means bringing people from different backgrounds together, so they can live and work peacefully and equally in society. For example, integration may mean learning English or even respecting British values.
Benefits of immigrants?
1- Economic benefit- They fill in job shortages and the pay tax
2- Culture benefit- They add to the diversity of the uk
3- Global befits- Helps build connections between the Uk and other counties, allowing peace, trade and tourism
Challenges of immigrants?
1- Language barriers- Many immigrants struggle to speak and learn English
2- Job shortages- if the rate of immigration continues in the uk, there will be job shortages for the British people (proven factually wrong tho as immigrants pick jobs British people don’t want example picking fruits)
3- Poulation increases- which makes more of a demand for housing, education and the NHS
