Verbal Barriers to Communication
Responses in conversation that can harm relationships and leave a person feeling inadequate, angry, or dependent.
Stereotyping
Assigning a set of attributes to a person based on their presumed membership in a particular group, often without factual basis.
Prejudice
A belief about whether the attributes linked to a particular group are generally positive or negative; goes beyond stereotyping.
Discrimination
Treating individuals differently, often unfavorably, based on prejudiced assumptions about a group.
Judging the Other Person
A verbal barrier where one criticizes, diagnoses, or labels the other person, affecting communication negatively.
Sending Solutions
A category of verbal barriers where the speaker offers unsolicited solutions, which can be manipulative or coercive.
Avoiding Others' Concerns
Responses that divert from the other person's issues and maintain emotional distance.
High-risk Responses
Communication blockers that can be more destructive under stress, as identified by Bolton (2007).
Effects of Verbal Barriers
Can include decreased self-esteem, increased defensiveness, resentment, dependency, and withdrawal.
Lack of Therapeutic Skills
Impediments to communication arising from issues such as lack of empathy, respect, or understanding patients' diversity.
