Word Structure
The composition of medical terms that includes roots, prefixes, suffixes, and combining vowels.
Root
The foundation of a medical word, which provides its main meaning.
Suffix
The word ending that modifies the meaning of the root.
Prefix
A small part attached to the beginning of a term that changes the meaning.
Combining Vowel
A vowel (usually 'o') that links the root to the suffix or another root.
Combining Form
A combination of a root and a combining vowel (e.g., hemat/o).
-logy
Suffix meaning 'process of study'.
-itis
Suffix meaning 'inflammation'.
-ectomy
Suffix meaning 'excision or removal'.
Prefix hypo-
Means 'below' or 'deficient'.
Prefix epi-
Means 'above' or 'upon'.
Combining Form aden/o
Means 'gland'.
Combining Form gastr/o
Means 'stomach'.
Combining Form erythr/o
Means 'red'.
-oma
Suffix meaning 'tumor, mass, swelling'.
