Connective Tissue
A type of tissue that binds, supports, protects, and serves as frameworks for the body, comprising cells that are farther apart than those in epithelial tissue.
Matrix
Substance in connective tissue that binds, supports, and provides a medium for the transfer of substances between blood and cells.
Fibroblasts
Star-shaped cells that produce the matrix of connective tissue, including collagen and elastic fibers.
Collagen Fibers
Thick threads of protein that are the major structural protein of the body, known for great tensile strength.
Elastic Fibers
Fibers made by fibroblasts that are weaker than collagen but allow for stretch and flexibility.
Loose Connective Tissue
A type of connective tissue characterized by sparse collagen fibers and looser tissue structure, found under the skin.
Dense Connective Tissue
A type of connective tissue with abundant collagen fibers, providing a more rigid structure found in tendons and ligaments.
Adipose Tissue
Type of connective tissue made up of fat cells (adipocytes) that stores fat, cushions joints, and insulates the body.
Cartilage
A type of connective tissue produced by chondrocytes that provides support and protection but has a poor blood supply, leading to slow healing.
Bone
The most rigid connective tissue, comprising cells capable of producing a matrix that includes minerals like calcium phosphate.
Blood
A connective tissue with a matrix called plasma, carrying red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets throughout the body.
