Gas Chromatography
A technique widely used for the determination of organic compounds in gaseous and volatile forms.
Elute
To extract compounds from a solid phase using a solvent.
Stationary Phase
The phase that remains fixed in the column during the gas chromatography process, against which the mobile phase moves.
Mobile Phase
The phase that carries the sample through the chromatography column, typically an inert gas.
FID Detector
Flame Ionization Detector - a device used in gas chromatography to detect individual compounds based on their ionization in a flame.
Operational Fundamentals
Basic principles of gas chromatography involving the dissolution, vaporization, and separation of the sample.
Gas-Liquid Chromatography
A common type of gas chromatography where the mobile phase is a gas partitioning on a liquid surface.
Gas-Solid Chromatography
A type of gas chromatography where the gas mobile phase is adsorbed onto a solid stationary phase.
Capillary Column
A type of chromatographic column commonly used in gas chromatography, characterized by its small diameter and long length.
Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD)
A detector that measures the change in thermal conductivity of the mobile phase due to the presence of solutes.
Flame Ionization Detector (FID)
A detector that measures the ions produced from combusting organic compounds in a flame.
Electron Capture Detector (ECD)
A detector that uses a ß-emitter to ionize the carrier gas and measures changes in current due to analyte presence.
Photoionization Detector (PID)
A detector that uses UV radiation to ionize molecules in the effluent and detects the resulting current.
Mass Spectrometry Detector (MS)
A sensitive detector used to identify analytes by measuring mass-to-charge ratios.
Packed Column
A type of gas chromatography column filled with a solid support material and used in early gas-liquid chromatography.
Open Tubular Column
A type of gas chromatography column with a thin layer of stationary phase on the inner walls for improved resolution.
Liquid Stationary Phase
The phase that is immobilized in the column for gas chromatography, typically having low volatility and high thermal stability.
Internal Standard Method
A quantitative analysis technique in gas chromatography that compensates for injection errors by using a reference compound.
