Bow
The forward section of the boat

Power 10
A call for rowers to do 10 of their best, most powerful strokes. It's a strategy used to pull ahead of a competitor.
Repechage
The second-chance race which ensures that everyone has two chances to advance from preliminary races since there is no seeding in the heats. French for "fish again."
Rigger
The triangular shaped metal device that is bolted onto the side of the boat and holds the oarlock.
Run
The run is the distance the shell moves during one stroke. You can figure it by looking for the distance between the puddles made by the same oar.
Scull
A rower uses two of these smaller oars to row the boat

Can be used interchangeably with boat.
Slide
The set of tracks for the wheels of each seat in the boat.
Starboard
Right side of the boat, while facing forward, in the direction of movement.
Stern
The rear of the boat; the direction the rowers are facing.
Straight Four
Refers to a shell without a coxswain i.e. a straight four or straight pair.
Stretcher or Footstrecher
Where the rower's feet go. The stretcher consists of two inclined footrests that hold the rower's shoes. The rower's shoes are bolted into the footrests.
Stroke
The rower who sits closest to the stern. The stroke sets the rhythm for the boat; others behind him must follow his cadence.
Stroke Coach
A small electronic display that rowers attach in the boat to show the important race information like stroke rate and elapsed time.
Sweep
A larger type of oar, and each rower uses only one when rowing.
Swing
The hard-to-define feeling when near-perfect synchronization of motion occurs in the shell, enhancing the performance and speed.
"Hold Water"
Where the rower puts a square blade in the water to stop the boat quickly.
"Way 'nuff" or "Let in run!"
Commands used by the coxswain to stop rowing.
"Three to build"
Increasingly strong strokes used to speed up a boat.
Hand on
Command by the coxswain used to start moving a boat off a rack or out of the water.
Over the heads ready up
Command used to push boat high above rowers while transporting it.

Seat
The part of the boat that slides back and forth
Cox Box
Device with microphone that the coxswain uses to talk to the crew, measure stroke rating, and time a workout or race.
Stroke Rating
The number of times per minute that the rowers take a stroke.
Launch
The motor boat that the coach uses to follow the rowers for coaching and safety.
Catch a crab
When the oar gets caught along the side of the boat and can't come out of the water.
Finish
The end of the stroke, and where the new stroke begins
Catch
The moment when the rower places the blade in the water to drive the boat.
