Jefferson

Election of 1800, shift to Democratic-Republican, Louisiana Purchase, realized that there are advantages to loose adherence to the constitution.

Madison

Democratic Republican, Father of constitution, bill of rights, led nation through 1812 war.

Monroe

Democratic Republican, Era of good feelings, collapse of federalist party, Monroe Doctrine that warned european nations from colonizing Americas, Missouri Compromise, criticized for Panic of 1819.

Quincy Adams

Whig party (power of Congress, opposed Andrew Jackson). Advocated for mass infrastructure (American system), against father (federalist), corrupt bargain w Henry Clay, against slavery & for abolition movement.

Jackson

Democrat, Indian Removal Act, Tariff of 1828, Bank of United States, wanted weak federal government, vetoed many bills, racist, crazy, insane.

Van Buren

Eighth President of the United States, known for his role in the formation of the Democratic Party, faced challenges like the Panic of 1837, and supported the concept of a small government.

Harrison

Republican, SHORTEST PRESIDENCY (31 days bc he died from pneumonia). Wins against indians, importance of presidential line of succession (who runs after his death).

Tyler

Whig Party. President due to Harrison’s death, vetoed creation of national bank (only other president without a party).

Polk

Democratic. Leadership mexican american war, expanded US west, new territory people wanted to be slave or free state, didnt decide and left it to next presidents

Taylor

Whig Party. Had to deal with issues from Polk presidency, slave owner, wanted to keep states together so admitted California as a free state

Fillmore

Knowing Nothing Party. Signed Compromise of 1850 (fugitive slave act), controversial for this compromise.

Pierce

Democratic Party. Kansas-Nebraska Act, Bleeding Kansas, criticized for helping American-Civil war

Buchanan

Democratic Party. Not good at securing south to prevent them from seceding, Dred Scott Decision, hated abolitionists, proslavery

Lincoln

Moderate Republican. First president of republican party who disliked slavery, led US through civil war, union preserved, emancipation proclamation, created 13th amendment, assassinated 1865

Johnson

Democratic Party. Worst possible person to serve president post-civil war. Against Reconstruction, pardoned southern states and wanted peaceful transition back to Union. Creator of the Johnson Plan, did not really advocate well for African Americans.

Grant

Prior (Union general who led US to victory over Confederate States). Wanted to serve all Americans and intent was to avoid party politics. Wanted passage of the 15th amendment and to protect African Americans.

Hayes

!!!Given presidency bc of Compromise 1877 (he gets president=end of reconstruction south)!!!Ended era of reconstruction in the South, gold currency. Suppressed railroad strike 1877.

Garfield

Advocacy for civil service reform, wanted to reduce government corruption. Education for African Americans

Arthur

Enforced civil service reform, Pendleton act (award jobs based on merit), wanted to modernize us navy

Cleveland

Two non-consecutive terms, economic depression, advocated gold standard, fought against corruption in government, new record for vetoes of proposed legislation. (414)

Benjamin Harrison

Sherman Antitrust Act, admission of 6 different states (more than any other presidency), expanded money supply for positive effect of inflation.

McKinley

Led US to victory in Spanish-American War, US became world power, supporting tariffs, McKinley Tariff. Symbolized new US Foreign policy, end of american frontier. Tariff rates almost 50% to protect domestic industry.

Teddy Roosevelt

Progressive policies, conservation importance, square deal, big stick diplomacy (peaceful negotiation but strong military), panama canal, nobel prize winner.

Taft

Continued Roosevelt’s progressive policies, 16th amendment passed, US influence south america, cautious approach led to split between him and progressive republicans. Was also a judge at some point.

Wilson

Led US through WW1, Federal Reserve Act, Clayton Antitrust Act, Fourteen Points, proposed League of Nations (failed)

Harding

Post ww1, return to normalcy in the 20s, teapot dome scandal, vetoed bonus bill which would’ve helped veteran soldiers.

Coolidge

Small gov, opposed government intervention, credited for roaring 20s, public confidence in White House, close connection w Americans, gov should not interfere w free market
