Friction
A force that resists the motion of two surfaces that are touching.
Static friction
A type of friction that prevents surfaces from sliding past each other.
Sliding friction
Friction that opposes the motion of surfaces sliding past each other.
Fluid friction
Friction between a surface and a fluid, such as air or water.
Air resistance
The fluid friction experienced by an object moving through air.
Strength of static friction
Changes to match the applied force up to a limit.
Lubricant
A substance that decreases friction by causing a slight separation between solid surfaces.
Microscopic roughness
The dips and bumps on surfaces that contribute to friction by catching on each other.
