Adobe Illustrator
Vector graphics software is used by millions of designers and artists to create everything from web/mobile graphics to logos, icons, book illustrations and product packaging.
Adobe Premiere
Timeline-based video editing software application developed by Adobe Systems. Industry-leading non-linear editing software for filmmakers, television broadcasters, journalists, students, and videographers.
Alignment
Arrangement in a straight line, to the left or to the right.
Art
Form of communication. It means whatever the artist intends it to mean. An act of expressing feelings, thoughts and observations. A diverse range of human activities in creating visual, performing, or technical skills.
Artist Statement
Information about context, explanations of process, descriptions of learning, related stories, reflections, or other details in a written, video, or spoken format shared by the artist to extend and deepen understanding of his or her artwork.
Artistic Process
Cognitive and physical actions through which arts learning takes place. These include Creating, Presenting, Responding, and Connecting.
Bleed
Printing that goes beyond the edge of where the sheet will be trimmed. Part of a document that gives the printer a small amount of space to account for movement of the paper and gets cut off when printed.
Brainstorm
Technique for the initial production of ideas or ways of solving a problem by an individual or group where ideas are contributed.
Collaboration
Students working together to brainstorm, formulate, and solve creative problems.
Criteria
Principles that direct significant constraints and guidelines for an artwork.
Critique
Individual or collective reflective process by which artists or designers experience, analyze, and evaluate a work of art or design.
Desktop
Computer designed for regular use at a single location on or near a desk due to its size and requirements. Also refers to the space where files are saved on a computer screen.
Design
Application of creativity to planning the optimal solution to a given problem and communication of that plan to others.
Digital Format
Anything in electronic form including photos, images, video, audio files, or artwork created or presented through electronic means.
Elements of Art
The fundamental language of art through which artists visually communicate and through which viewers can describe, analyze, interpret, judge, and understand art. The elements of art include line, shape, color, texture, value, form and space.
Export
To send something from one place to another. An example would be to send a computer file from one program to another program by saving as a different file extension.
Film
Multimedia entertainment content made to distribute like a movie or a series.
Folder
stores documents and other types of files, such as applications, archives, scripts, and libraries. Can be renamed, moved and duplicated.
Import
stores documents and other types of files, such as applications, archives, scripts, and libraries. Can be renamed, moved and duplicated.
Italics
Cursive font based on a stylised form of calligraphy handwriting. A way to emphasise key points in a printed text or to stress certain words.
Jump Cut
An abrupt transition from one scene to another.
Justified
When text is aligned along the left margin and letter to word spacing is adjusted so that the text falls flush with both margins.
Kerning
Process of adjusting spacing between characters in a proportional font.
Landscape
This orientation is longer from left to right.
Leading
Describes the distance between lines of text.
Lesson Plan
Teacher's plans for teaching.
Lowercase
Smaller form of letters in a typeface or the non-capital letters.
Lorum Ipsum
Placeholder text commonly used to demonstrate the visual form of a document.
Margins
Area between the main content of a page and the page edges.
Portfolio
Actual or virtual collection of artworks demonstrating knowledge and skills organized to reflect an individual's creative growth.
Portrait
This orientation is longer from top to bottom.
Pull Quote
Key phrase or excerpt from an article that's used as a page layout element that serves to entice readers into the article.
Principles of Design
Concepts used by artists to organize the composition or structure of artwork. The principles of design include balance, emphasis, movement, proportion, repetition, rhythm, unity, and variety.
Save
Command used to preserve a new document being created.
Save As
Command used to create a copy of a document that's already been preserved.
Shortcut
Function in the operating system or application when pressed. These may involve pressing two or three keys at a time and speed up the work process.
Standard
What we want students to know and be able to do at the end of any given time.
Theme
Subject or topic of artistic expression.
Thumbnail Sketches
Rough drawings of design concepts or solutions. Used to visualize ideas and concepts by hand before moving to the screen.
Timeline
In video editing, this is commonly used to lay a video project out in a linear fashion horizontally across a monitor so it can be played, replayed and edited.
Toolbox
Window that contains icons and buttons for use in programs.
Transitions
How clips of videos flow together to make a movie. Some examples of these may include a dissolve, fades, wipes or jump cuts.
Trim
Refers to taking off either part of the beginning or ending of a video clip.
Tutorial
Method of transferring knowledge as a part of a learning process. More interactive and specific than a lecture because it teaches by example.
Typesetting
Process of laying out large amounts of text (book, magazine, etc.) and making sure it's legible, readable, and visually appealing.
Undo
Erases the last change made to a document or reverting to an older state (ctrl+Z)
Uppercase
Written or printed with capital letters.
Vector Graphics
Most commonly used for creating logos, illustrations and print layouts. Types of files such as AI and EPS remain editable (Illustrator).
Voiceover
Narration in a movie or broadcast not accompanied by an image of the speaker.
Window
A section or part that appears when something is prompted or double-clicked. It shows the elements of a computer, it's organization, folders and programs.
