Anatomy of a Syringe with Needle

Common Needle & Syringe Sizes
Syringes:
1 cc (TB)
3 cc
6 cc
12 cc
20 cc
35 cc
60 cc
Needles:
14 gauge
16 g
18 g
20 g
22 g
25 g
27 g
Lower the number the thicker diameter needle

Syringes
1st (left): 3cc
2nd: 6cc
3rd: curved tip
4th: 60cc

Catheter Tips

TB Syringe (1cc) Tuberculin Syringe
1mL total volume
Largest increments are 1/10th of mL (0.1)
Smallest increments are 1/100th of mL (0.01)

TB Syringe continued..
Watch the hub for bubbles
Can “tap” to help remove air trapped in liquid
Need to be very careful about bubbles in liquid because they can greatly alter the amount of actual medication given to small animals

Values of Lines on Different Syringes
Each line for: 1 cc TB syringe: Between 0.1 cc and 0.2 cc = 0.01 cc = 1/100 cc
Each line for: 1cc syringe 0.02 cc = 2/100 cc
Each line for: 3cc syringe 0.1 cc 1/10 cc
Each line for: 6 cc & 12 cc = 0.2 cc = 2/10 cc
Each line for: 20 cc each line = 1cc
Needles
22 gauge:
Very commonly used in small animal medicine
Different lengths
25 gauge:
Very commonly used in small animal medicine
27 gauge - tiny
TB size

Insulin Needles and Syringes
28-30 gauge needle attached to end of syringe, cannot detach
Units of insulin, increments of cc’s on barrel of syringe
U40 or U100
Use only insulin in U40
10 units = 0.1 cc
Needle and Syringe Use
Administer injection of a sterile fluid (medication, vaccine, etc.)
Venipuncture and blood collection
Needles get dull easily, particularly the smaller gauge
Need to keep sterile prior to injecting pet
No fingers on needle
Prior to SQ or IM injection into pet, aspirate to make sure do not get blood
When giving vaccines pull back to make sure you’re not in a vein or artery
Dispose of needle in sharps container
Sharps Container
In veterinary medicine, non-infectious (to humans) blood tainted syringes do not need to go into sharps container, but needles do go into sharps container
Syringe Use
“No darts” no “cigarettes”
A syringe is a one handed instrument
