Isothermal Expansion
Expansion of a gas at a constant temperature where the ideal gas law is valid, work is negative when the gas expands, and positive when compressed.
Adiabatic
A process with no heat exchange, where internal energy change equals work done. ▪ Q = 0 and DEint = W
Isobaric
A process at constant pressure where work is equal to pressure times change in volume, and internal energy change equals heat added plus work done. W = P (Vf – Vi ) and DEint = Q + W
Isothermal
A process at constant temperature where internal energy change is zero, and heat is equal to the negative of the work done. DEint = 0 and Q = -W
