Substance
a type of matter with a fixed composition
Element
a substance made up of atoms that are all alike
Compound
a substance in which the atoms of two or more elements are chemically combined in a fixed composition
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture in which different materials remain distinct
Suspension
a hetergeneous mixture made of a liquid and solid particles that settle
Colloid
is a hetergeneous mixture with particles that never settle
Homogeneous mixture
a mixture that remains constantly and uniformly mixed and has particles that are so small they cannot be seen
Solution
the same thing as a homogeneous mixture
Physcial Property
Any characteristic of a material that you can observe without changing the identity of the substance
Physical change
A change in size, shape, or state of matter in which identity of the substance remains the same
Chemical Property
Any charateristic of a material that you can observe that produces one or more new substance
Chemical change
A change of one substance to another

The mass of all substance that are present before a chemical change
