Intersex
A condition where an individual is born with ambiguous combinations of male and female chromosomes, hormones, and anatomy.
Differences in Sexual Development (DSD)
Medical conditions related to atypical development of physical sex characteristics.
Klinefelter syndrome
A condition where a male has an extra X chromosome (XXY), leading to reduced male secondary sex characteristics.
Turner syndrome
A condition affecting females characterized by a missing or incomplete X chromosome, leading to incomplete development of ovaries.
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH)
A genetic disorder that affects adrenal gland function, resulting in excessive production of androgens, leading to ambiguous genitalia in genetic females.
Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS)
A condition where individuals with XY chromosomes do not respond to testosterone, leading to underdeveloped male genitalia.
Gender Identity
An individual's personal sense of their gender, which may or may not align with their assigned sex at birth.
Cisgender
A term used for individuals whose gender identity matches their assigned sex at birth.
Transgender
A term for individuals whose gender identity differs from their assigned sex at birth.
Gender role socialization
The process by which individuals learn and internalize the expectations and behaviors appropriate for their gender in a given culture.
Gender Schemas
Cognitive structures that encompass beliefs and expectations about gender roles and characteristics.
Gender constancy
The understanding that gender is a stable characteristic and does not change based on external appearances.
