What is an autobiography/memoir?
a self-written account of a person life, told from their own perspective.
What are the Feature of an Autobiographies/Memoirs?
A description of an important past event in the authors life
Based on what the author recalls (not necessarily the facts of the event)
Reflects only the authors thoughts and feelings on the topic

What are diaries/journals purpose/ what is it?
diaries capture the intimate thoughts, experiences, and reflections of an individual
They are honest, emotional, introspective, intimate and a reflective look into someone’s life.
What are the features of Diaries/journals?
Written in 1st person
The author may refer to the diary as if talking to a friend, but DO NOT write “Dear Diary”
implied knowledge of people, places, and situations in the writers life
May be no intended audience
What is the structure of diaries/journals
Time markers: Day/Date/Time
Retrospective: Chronological structure provides a timeline of the authors experiences. May include flashbacks
Typically contains multiple paragraphs, especially if numerous topics are being written about
Ideas may contain unstructured thoughts and reflections: jump all over the place.
What language is used in diaries/journals?
The author has a unique, specific voice. The diary sound like them
Vocab depends on the voice of the writer
The tone should reflect the personality and outlook of the writer. Step into the characters mind and then capture what they would be like writing in there diary
Focus on the mundane and ordinary. Include vivid details and descriptions

How to write diaries/journals?
Always write in first-person
Know your elements of form
Start by writing the day and date on the left-hand corner of the paper
show clear separation between paragraphs
Start each paragraph with a clear topic
Be selective and expressive in your writing
express your emotions and thoughts Cleary with appropriate vocab and words. include details and descriptions.
Be carful with grammar and tenses
Be sure to explain the main plot of your journal
Make sure your tone supports your main points by using strong vocab words

Include a conclusion or next course of action

What is the purpose of descriptive writing?
Create a vivd and detailed mental image of a person, place, object or event in the readers mind
Its primary purpose is to “show, not tell” the reader about the subject, immersing them in the experience and evoking specific emotions or a particular atmosphere

Language between family and close friends
Ex: pet names, inside jokes, terms of endearment

names any person, place, thing or idea

What are proper nouns?
Names a specific person, place, thing or idea
always begin with capital letters.
Ex: Venus, Idaho, Thomas Jefferson
What are Concrete noun?
A thing that you can see, hear, smell, touch, or taste
Ex: cat, moon, banana, money, flower, book
What are Abstract nouns?
Names an idea, a quality, a felling, or a characteristic
Ex: freedom. strength, love, anxiety, intelligence
What is a Collective noun?
a word that names a group of people or things
Ex: Audience, band, class, club, crowd, family, team
What is a Compound noun?
consists of two or more words
Ex: sunflower, laptop, honeybee, polar bear, New York, high school, great-aunt, one-fourth, sister-in-law
What are Pronouns?
A word that takes the place of a noun
What are Personal pronouns?
refer to the person speaking, the person spoken to, or the one spoken about.
I, me, my, mine, we, us, our, you, your, he, him, his, she, her
Ex: We gave the box to him, and he opened it.
What is a Possessive pronouns?
show ownership or possession

Ex: His letter came, but mine has not.
What is indefinite Pronouns?
Express an amount or refer to an unspecified person or thing.
all, another, any, anybody, anyone, anything, both, each, either
Ex: Neither of the guest had any of the food.
What is Demonstrative pronouns?
Point out a specific person, place, thing, or idea
this, that, these, those
Ex: This is a funny card, but that is even funnier.

begins a question

What is a reflexive pronoun?
indicates that the subject and object of a sentence are the same person or thing.

Emphasize a noun or another pronoun in the same sentence

What are verbs?
Words that express an action or a state of being
What is an action verb?
shows an action you can see, some express actions that cannot be seen
speak, run, drive, think, trust, recognize, remember
Ex: she lifted the box , we value your judgement
What are linking verbs?
do not express action.They join the subject with a subject complement. A word that identifies or described the subject

a word used to modify a verb, an adjective, or another adverb

What are Prepositions?
A word that shows the relationship of a noun or a pronoun to some other word in the sentence.

What are conjunctions?
A word used to join words or groups of words
What are Coordinating Conjunctions?
conjunctions that join equal parts of a sentence
and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet
Ex: Yesterday we went to a movie and played. Did you see the western or the comedy?
What are correlative conjunctions?
Conjunctions that are used in pairs
Both…and, neither…nor, whether…or, either..or, not only…but also
Ex: Neither my mother nor my father would reveal the secret.
What is audience?
The single person or group of people for whom the piece was written. The audience can be determined to some extent by looking at the form and language of the piece.
What is context?
The situation or background to a text or its author
Social context: all about society and what you need to know about your society in any situation
Historical context: all about what was unique or specific about a certain time in history. Can include cultural and social context that are in the past.
Cultural context: all about understanding cultural expectations and norms. Specific to a cultures or subcultures values.
Economic context: describe what you need to know about the economics of a situation.

What is mood?

Can be defined specifically as a temporary state of mind or feeling.
What is connotation?
Emotion or human reaction to a word
Sometimes the connotation of a word will change due to the way it’s presented, the perspective, or the context.
Everyones reaction to a word may be different since we’ve each had different life experiences which affect how we interact with a word
