Declarative Sentence

Command Sentence

Compound Sentence

Complex Sentence

Two independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction and one or more dependent clauses.
Clause
A group of words that has a subject and a predicate.
Phrase
A group of words that does not have a subject or predicate.
Coordinating Conjunctions
Words that connect clauses or sentences: But, For, And, Or, Nor, Yet, So. (F.A.N.B.O.Y.S.)
Subordinating Conjunctions
Words that connect a dependent clause to an independent clause: After, Because, Although, Since, Before, While.
Parallel Structure
The repetition of words, phrases, and clauses that share a grammatical structure.
Syntax
The way words are arranged in sentences.
Figurative Language
The comparison of two different things that aren't similar.
Metaphor
A figure of speech that makes a comparison between two unlike things.
Simile
A figure of speech comparing two unlike things using 'as', 'like', or 'than'.
Personification
Attributing human characteristics to non-human entities.
Hyperbole
An exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally.
Imagery
Words that appeal to the senses: sound, sight, taste, touch, & smell.
Diction
The author's choice of words.
Tone
The feeling the author creates in the writing.

Facts, observations, reasons, examples, & incidents that make writing come alive.
