What are the three methods used for sizing drill bits and define each
Inches: 1-16inch to 4 inches or larger
letter: A-Z A being the smallest and Z being the largest
Number: Sizes range from No.80 to No. 1 No. 80 being the smallest and No.1 being the largest
Which part of the riveted joint layout procedure requires a distance 75% away from the existing rivet pitch
Transverse pitch
Transverse Pitch
used when two or more rows of rivets are required
75% of the rivet pitch is the distance between both rows
Describe the two types of nomenclature drill bits
General purpose drill bits- used for soft steel, aluminum, and nonmetallic
Carbide Tipped- used for cast iron, cast steel (at high speeds), Ferrous metals
Nomenclature
Angle- 59%
Clearance- 12%
When is the combination method necessary
One piece of steel is too thick, other is too thin - dimpled the second sheet is too thin to be machine countersink
Step 1 (drilling procedures)
Center punching (use a center punch, prevent wandering)
Step 2 (drilling procedures)
Clamping (Done before drilling)
Step 3 (drilling procedures)
Positioning (90 degrees to work, or else drill bit wanders or hole elongation occours
Step 4 (drilling procedures)
Speed and feed (determined by the material being drilled, type of drill bit used, and by the type of drill. High speed and feed must be used on aluminum alloys.)
Step 5 (drilling procedures)
De-burring : removed by using an oversized twist drill bit
Step 6 (drilling procedures)
Cleco Fasteners - temperarily secures posts in a position for drilling
Purpose of drilling
to make holes of the proper size in sheet metal and various other components of the aircraft
Hand drill
used for small jobs where no power is available
used for drilling ¼ inch holes and smaller
Pneumatic drill
compress air
large holes where speed and accuracy are required
Drill press
heavy duty and sensitive drilling
Edge distance
The distance from the center of the rivet to the nearest edge of the metal
What are the inspection procedures for rivets? Step 1
Check for blemishes or deformed heads
Inspect bucktail for proper height and width and for deformities such as slated or off to one size
Remove and replace all rivets that do not meet standards
Rivet guns and the purpose
Fast hitting,Corner riveter, Slow hitting, One-shot, squeeze riviter
Rivet set
A tool with a die in one end for driving a particular rivet
transmits blows from rivet gun to rivet
Bucking bar
shape the bucktail of a solid shank rivet
size and weight depend on the hardness of the rivet
State the different types of solid shank rivets
Counter sunk (Flush), Raised
The different types of solid shank rivets purpose
Countersunk (flushed)- even with the aircraft skin- used where aerodynamic smoothness is necessary
Raised- The rivest head protrudes above the skin of the aircraft. Used where aerodynamics are not a major factor
How are countersunk rivets sized
measured by the top of the head to the bottom of the shank. (graduated by 1/16 inch increments)
How are raised rivets sized
measured from the bottom of the rivet head to the bottom of the shank. Gradulated by the 1/16inch increments
Diameter for rivets
Gradulated by 1/32 inch
Minimum rivet diameter
1 times the thickest sheet. Maximum is the 3x the thickest sheet
Seven procedures to solid rivet removal and what happens if the hole is elongated (1)
File a flat surface on raised head rivets
Seven procedures to solid rivet removal and what happens if the hole is elongated (2)
Center punch the center of the rivet
Seven procedures to solid rivet removal and what happens if the hole is elongated (3)
Select a twist drill slightly smaller than the shank
Seven procedures to solid rivet removal and what happens if the hole is elongated (4)
Drill the rivet head only, not the shank
Seven procedures to solid rivet removal and what happens if the hole is elongated (5)
Break off the head of the rivet with drift punch
Seven procedures to solid rivet removal and what happens if the hole is elongated (6)
Punch out remaining rivet shank and bucktail
Seven procedures to solid rivet removal and what happens if the hole is elongated (7)
Retrieve shank and bucktail - if hole elongates, consult specific structural repair manual
Two types of blind rivets
Mechanical lock, friction lock
