Cold War
A state of tension between countries or groups of countries where each side tries to discredit the other while strengthening itself; involves an arms race and the space race.
Satellite States
A country that is greatly influenced by another, being under its direct rule or control.
Grand Alliance
The alliance during the Second World War between the USA, the British Empire, and the USSR against the Axis powers.
Government in Exile
A government that claims the right to rule a country from another country.
Yalta Conference
A meeting in February 1945 between Britain, the USA, and Russia where they agreed to bring non-Communist members into the Polish government.
Truman Doctrine
The policy of the United States to help any country threatened by communism.
Marshall Plan
A US program that offered aid to Europe to rebuild itself after the Second World War.
OEEC
The Organisation for European Economic Co-operation, which was set up to administer Marshall Aid.
Cominform
The Communist Information Bureau, established by leaders of communist parties to direct activities of communists elsewhere.
Comecon
Russia's response to the OEEC, with the aim to coordinate the economies of the satellite states.
Domino Theory
The belief that if one country in South East Asia fell to communism, the rest would follow.

The closure of all rail, road, and canal links to West Berlin by the Russians in June, cutting off the western zones.
NATO
The North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, a military organisation made of capitalist, Western powers.
Warsaw Pact
An organization that gave Russia the right to keep troops in Eastern Europe and allowed Russia to tighten control over its satellite states.
Brussels Treaty
The treaty that created a military alliance of Britain, France, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxemburg.

A nationalist and communist leader of Vietnam who led revolts against the French.
Vietnam War
A conflict where the USA tried to ensure the containment of communism.
Containment
The act of stopping something from spreading.
MPLA
People's Movement for Angola Liberation, a liberation movement that gained independence.
FNLA
Front for the National Liberation of Angola, a liberation group.
UNITA
Unified Nation for the Total Independence of Angola, also an opposing group.
Civil Society
Composed of non-governmental organizations.
