Equipment
· Clippers
· Swab/cotton wool with hibi-scub
· Swab/cotton wool with surgical spirit
· Size 11 scalpel blade (if using the cut-down technique)
· Tape (micropore, durapore, elastoplast) - normally 3 strips
· IV catheter of a suitable size for the patient
· Heparin saline
· Bung or T-connector
· Fluid bag
· Giving set
· Drip stand
What is step 1 for setting up fluids?
Remove giving set from packaging and turn off regulator
What is step 2 for setting up fluids?
Remove fluid bag from outer packaging and either set on table or hang on drip stand
What is step 3 for setting up fluids?
Remove protective tag from fluid bag and from the giving set
What is step 4 for setting up fluids?
Insert the giving set into the fluid bag using an aseptic technique
What is step 5 for setting up fluids?
Squeeze the chamber until about 1/2 full
What is step 6 for setting up fluids?
Release regulator slowly to fill the drip line
- Take care not to allow air bubbles to form
- Minimal fluid should be wasted
What is step 7 for setting up fluids?
Close the regulator
