Water Bath
a container of water heated to a given temperature, used for heating substances placed in smaller containers.

Power Supply
Connects to an electrophoresis tank setting up an electric field between the two electrodes.

Dry Bath
Used to incubate samples at a constant temperature. They are quicker to heat up, but heat samples slower. Better for aseptic techniques.

Electronic Balance
a balance that measures mass automatically

Gel Imager
Used to to visualize and photo-document nucleic acid samples separated through gel electrophoresis, count microbial colonies, separate protein samples on western blots, and identify mixtures through thin layer chromatography

Drying Rack
This is where you will place glassware once you have already washed it to leave it to dry

Water Distiller
device that purifies water by the process of distillation.

Water Bath Float
used to suspend samples upright in a water bath

Pestle
a club-shaped hand tool for grinding and mixing substances in a mortar

Mortar
a bowl-shaped vessel in which substances can be ground and mixed with a pestle

Transfer Pipet (Unsterile)
Used to transfer small amounts of precise liquids. Usually less than 1 mL. Not wrapped, Possibly Contaminated

Transfer Pipet (Sterile)
Used to transfer small amounts of precise liquids. Usually less than 1 mL. Wrapped and Air Tight, Prevents contamination.

Manual Pipet Pump
Used to mechanically collect and disperse liquids via serological pipets

Weigh Boat
Used to weigh or transfer chemicals (usually dry)

Cuvette
a straight-sided, optically clear container for holding liquid samples in a spectrophotometer or other instrument.

Micropipet Rack
Used to hold or store adjustable micropipets

Gel Comb
Used to make the wells in the gel

Erlenmeyer flask
used to hold liquids, has narrow neck to prevent splashes

Digital Balance Shield
Prevents air flow/circulation to alter mass values.

Autoclave
Piece of equipment used to sterilize articles by way of steam under pressure and/or dry heat

Microtube Rack
Use to store/hold small tubes used in the lab.

pH Meter
a device used to measure the pH of a solution

Petri Dish
a shallow dish used to culture bacteria

A device for presenting one image to one eye and another image to the other eye. Small Magnification values.

Fixed Volume Micropipet
A micropet with a set volume, cannot be adjusted to pipet larger or smaller volumes.

Graduated Cylinder
instrument used to measure volume of a liquid

Chemical Scoop
used to transfer dry chemicals from container to weigh boat.

Funnel
for pouring liquid or other substance through a small opening

Heat Mit
To Prevent burns due to grabbing hot glassware.

Stir Bar Retriever
Magnetic bar used in the stir station; retriever used to get stir bar out of container without touching any chemical

Stir bar
teflon coated magnet used with a stirring hot plate to mix solutions with heat

Volumetric Flask
used for making liquid solutions of precise volumes

Coverslips
square of glass that goes on top of the specimen

Microscope Slide
a small flat rectangular piece of glass on which specimens can be mounted for microscopic study

Microwell Plate
a flat plate with multiple "wells" used as small test tubes

Gel Drying Apparatus
Used to prepare and hold gel for dehydration

Gel Dryer
dehydrates gels for long-term storage

Beaker
a lipped cylindrical glass container for laboratory use.

Spectrophotometer
An instrument that measures the proportions of light of different wavelengths absorbed and transmitted by a pigment solution.

Kim Wipes
the wipe used to clean the lenses/objectives on a microscope

Automatic Pipet Pump
Used in serological pipetting to electronically collect and disperse samples.

vortexer
a machine that will vigorously shake a container to mix the contents

test tube
open tube used to hold liquids

A small tube with ultra-thin walls specifically designed to transfer heat efficiently

Ring Stand
Used as a support; Rings and clamps attach to the stand

Electrophoresis Box
the entire apparatus for separating DNA fragments

microcentrifuge tube
small, cylindrical, plastic container with conical bottom; used to store and centrifuge small amounts of liquid

Adjustable Micropipet
Micropipet in which the volume can be adjusted.

Micropipet Tips
Disposable pointed attachments are used with pipettes to speed the accuracy of sample processing and loading while reducing the risk of cross-contamination between samples.

Centrifuge
device to separate substances by spinning them at high speed

Inoculation loop (unsterile)
used to transfer culture specimens to different media or to create slides
