Deviance

• behavior, trait, belief, or other characteristic that violates a norm and causes a negative reaction

• varies widely across cultures, time, and solution

  • breaking rules

  • not meeting expectations

  • drug addiction

• argued that deviance is a norm and necessary part of any society

Robert K. Merton

• American Sociologist

• argued that society may be set up in a way encourages to much deviance

• Strain Theory

• force/pressure to individual to either work either within the structure of society

• becomes members of a deviant subculture in an attempt to achieve those goals

• DEVIANCE is a result of STRAIN between
