Nationalism
Belief that a group of people who share a common culture, history, or identity should be united under their own independent state, creating loyalty to the nation rather than to other groups or regions.
Self-determination
The concept that nationalities have the right to govern themselves
Imperialism
The policy or process by which a state extends political, economic, or cultural control over
another territory or people, often through colonization, military force, or economic dominance.
Colonization
Process by which a state establishes settlements in a foreign territory and imposes political,
economic, and cultural control over the land and its people.
Devolution
The process by which central governments transfer power or authority to regional or local
governments within the state, often in response to ethnic, cultural, or economic pressures
Satellite states
Countries that are formally independent but are heavily influenced or controlled
politically, economically, or militarily by another, more powerful state.
Berlin conference
A meeting (1884-1885) of European powers in which Africa was divided into
territories without regard to existing ethnic or cultural boundaries, establishing formal rules for
colonization there.
Genocide
The systematic and deliberate killing of a large group of people, especially those belonging to
a particular ethnicity, nationality, religion, or race, with the intent to destroy that group.
Cold War
A period of political and military tension (1945–1991) between the United States and the
Soviet Union, marked by conflict over political and economic systems, nuclear competition, and the
creation of rival alliances without direct fighting between the superpowers.
