Intellectual Property
A subcategory of intangible personal property referring to ideas, information, and creative works.
Copyright
The monopoly to copy or reproduce a created work. Protects the actual work itself but not the ideas behind it.
Patent
The exclusive right to produce, market, and sell a specific invention.
Trademark
Protects terms, symbols, designs, sounds, or colors that identify a product or company and distinguishes it from a competitor.
Confidential Information
Information given in circumstances clear that it is intended to remain confidential and not be disclosed.
Trade Secret
Particular kind of confidential information that gives a businessperson a competitive advantage.
Fair Dealing
An exception that allows limited use of copyrighted work under certain conditions, such as education and criticism.
Infringement
The unauthorized use of copyrighted material, which can lead to legal consequences.
Moral Rights
Rights retained by the creator of a work to ensure their authorship is recognized and their work is not altered negatively.
Regulatory Framework
Legislation, like the Copyright Act and Patent Act, that governs intellectual property and its protection.
