Skeletal System
The system providing support, protection, assisting in movement, storing minerals, and producing blood cells.
Cartilage
A flexible connective tissue found at joints and formed from chondrocytes.
Osteocytes
Bone cells that lie in lacunae and are involved in the maintenance of bone tissue.
Compact Bone
A dense and highly organized type of bone tissue composed of osteons.
Spongy Bone
A lighter type of bone tissue that contains trabeculae and houses red bone marrow.
Trabeculae
Thin plates that make up the sponge-like structure of spongy bone.
Diaphysis
The shaft of a long bone containing the medullary cavity filled with yellow bone marrow.
Epiphysis
The expanded end of a long bone composed of spongy bone and containing red bone marrow.
Periosteum
Connective tissue that covers all bones and is continuous with ligaments and tendons.
Articular Cartilage
A thin layer of hyaline cartilage covering the epiphysis of bones at joints.
Endosteum
A thin membrane lining the medullary cavity of a bone.
Chondrocytes
Cells found in cartilage that lie within lacunae.
Hyaline Cartilage
A type of cartilage found at the ends of long bones, nose, and ribs.
Fibrocartilage
A type of cartilage found in intervertebral disks and the knee.
Elastic Cartilage
A type of flexible cartilage found in ear flaps and the epiglottis.
Tendons
Connective tissues that attach muscles to bones.
