M-03 Group Communication

Group

Collection of about three to twenty (3-20) people who feel a sense of belonging and common purpose.

Group Communication

consists of all the verbal and nonverbal messages shared among members, is what makes participating in groups a positive or negative.

Family/Families

can generally be define as group of intimates who, through their communication, generate a sense of home, group identity, history and future

Social Groups

Composed of people who genuinely care about each other and enjoy spending time together

Support Groups

Composed of people who come together toInterest Groups about a problem common to the members

Interest Groups

Composed of individuals who come together because they shared a common interest, hobby, or activity.

Service Groups

perform hands-on charitable works to raise money to help organizations that perform such work.

Work Group

Collection of three or more people to work together to complete a specific task.

Work Group Team

A subset of a work group where members also hold accountable.

Effective group teams

appropriate number of members with diverse skills and viewpoints, clearly defined goals, and explicit roles and rules for members

Heterogeneous Group

Members are more likely to have diverse information, perspectives and values and consequently, may discuss more thoroughly before reaching a decision.

Homogeneous group

Members are more likely to know the same things ,come at the problem from the same perspective, and consequently, may overlook some important information or take shortcuts in the problem-solving process.

Elements of Work Group Team Goal

• Effective goals serve a common purpose

Virtual Group

members are separated geographically but come together to “meet”, to share to each other.

Forming

Characterized by orientation, testing, and dependence. Members try to understand precisely what the goal is, what role they will play in reaching it, and what other members are like

Storming

Characterized by conflict and power.

Norming

When there is an increased cohesion, collaboration, and motivation to achieve the group goal after solving conflicts in the storming

Performing

When there is a presence of harmony, productivity, problem-solving, and shared leadership.

During this stage, the group capitalizes on the skills, knowledge, and abilities of all members to work toward achieving a goal.

Adjourning

When the group celebrates goal accomplishment and each member’s role in achieving it, reflecting on what they learned and disengaging.
