Problem Behavior in the Classroom:
Noncompliance / Defiance
Not doing what is expected or what is asked on a routine basis.
Self-Stimulation
Repetitive movements or sounds that are meant for soothing the individual, but are not socially appropriate.
Withdrawal
Continuous refusal to participate or engage.
Aggression
Physical or verbal hostility that is intended to harm the recipient.
These responses to negative behavior have been shown to decrease the frequency of the behaviors:
Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support
A 3-tiered system that provides positive attention for desired behaviors from all students and becomes more specific and motivating for struggling students.
Primary - School-wide procedures that reinforce positive behaviors such as having all classrooms walk through the hallways in the same way
Secondary - Student specific intervention such as social skills training, academic tutoring, and self-management training
Tertiary - Intensive support for students that includes an intervention plan, de-escalation techniques, and planning with parents to ensure consistent behavior in all areas
Reinforcement
Providing positive responses to positive behaviors in an effort to increase the frequency (the opposite is punishment).
Proactive Strategies
Actions that increase the probability of positive behaviors occurring
For example, providing clearly defined expectations and building relationships help decrease negative behaviors.
Reductive Strategies
Actions that reduce the probability of negative behaviors occurring (extinction)
For example, removing the audience means letting the student know that you will address their behavior later and moving on so that no one can give attention to negative behavior.
