Atkinson-Shiffrin Model
A model of memory that describes three main stores: sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory.
Control Processes
Processes such as attention, encoding, rehearsal, and retrieval that move information between memory stores.
Short-Term Memory (STM)
A memory system that holds information currently in use, requiring active mental effort to maintain it.
Capacity of Short-Term Memory
According to Miller (1956), STM can typically hold about 7 plus or minus 2 items.
Digit Span Task
A method for measuring STM capacity where participants recall sequences of numbers presented to them.
Decay Theory
The theory that information in short-term memory fades over time if not actively rehearsed.
Interference Theory
Keppel and Underwood's theory that suggests interference from other information can impede recall from short-term memory.
Working Memory
An extension of short-term memory that emphasizes its dynamic nature and active processing of information.
Duration of Short-Term Memory
Research shows retention of information decreases significantly over 18 seconds without rehearsal.
