Simple Machines
Tools that make work easier by redistributing work without reducing the total amount done.
Fulcrum
The point around which a lever rotates.
Mechanical Advantage (MA)
The ratio of the length of the lever on the input force side to the length on the output force side.
1st Class Levers
Levers where the fulcrum is between the input force and output force, multiplying force and changing its direction.
2nd Class Levers
Levers where the output force is between the input force and fulcrum, multiplying force without changing its direction.
3rd Class Levers
Levers where the input force is between the fulcrum and output force, not multiplying force but increasing the distance traveled by effort.
Pulley
A wheel and axle with a groove for a rope or chain, used to lift loads.
Inclined Plane
A flat surface that is higher on one end, making it easier to move objects upward.
Wedge
A tool made of two inclined planes joined together, used to split objects.
Screw
An inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder, used to hold objects together or lift them.
Compound Machine
A machine made up of more than one simple machine.
