The undeveloped area at the edge of the settled areas where life was not easy.
Plantations
Large farms in the Southern colonies where cash crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo grew. Indentures servants originally tended these farms but because of Baconâs Rebellion, it was changes to slaves.
The difference between free colonial citizens and slaves
Colonial citizens: These citizens were free and normally used slaves to do the difficult tasks for them.
Slaves: Worked for the citizens. Normally worked long hours and didnât get paid.
The dynamics of the colonial household
The Father was the central figure in the household while the wives and children did what they were told.
Five colonial trades/jobs
Baker: baked breads and pastries
Blacksmith: prepared tools
Carpenter: built houses
Midwife: served at the birthing of children
Shoemaker: made and repaired shoes
Triangular trade components
New England imported slaves in exchange for sugar. Sugar was sent to New England. American products passed through England to Continental Europe.
John Eliot
Pringted the first printed Bible in the Algonquin language and helped set up the praying towns.
Praying towns
This is where Indians who converted to Christians would learn about the Bible and European Law, manners, and town life.
Pequot War
Started by the Pequots, ambushed an Indian Fort and killed as many Indians as they could, the rest were captured and sold as slaves.
King Philipâs War
Started by the colonists, this war was branched off of the Pequot War. They killed so many Indians that they could not maintain their land or way of life. Colonies expand because of the wars.
Baconâs Rebellion
Raided the wrong Indians with the goal to take land, but was unsucceful because they had made an agreement they would no longer raid or take land. In the end, they ended up burning down their own city.
Three social classes
Upper: made up of aristocrats
Middle: made up most of the population
Lower: tended to being servants and slaves
Colonial education
Aristocrats had a better chance of education while lower class and some middle were taught at home
