Erythrocytes
Another name for red blood cells; cells that transport oxygen in the body.
Erythropoiesis
The process of producing red blood cells from pluripotent stem cells in the bone marrow.
Pluripotent stem cell
A type of stem cell that can differentiate into various blood cells, including erythrocytes.
Erythropoietin
A hormone produced by the kidneys that stimulates the production of red blood cells.
Reticulocyte
An immature form of a red blood cell that is released from the bone marrow.
Reticulocytosis
An increased number of reticulocytes in the blood due to excessive loss of red blood cells.
Hypoxia
A condition in which there is a deficiency of oxygen reaching the tissues.
Hemoglobin
A protein in red blood cells that binds oxygen and carries it throughout the body.
Bilirubin
A substance produced from the breakdown of hemoglobin, which can accumulate and cause jaundice.
Jaundice
A condition characterized by yellowing of the skin and eyes due to high bilirubin levels.
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
A common lab test used to evaluate overall health and detect a variety of disorders.
Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV)
A lab value that indicates the average size of red blood cells.
Microcytic Anemia
Anemia characterized by smaller than normal red blood cells, often due to iron deficiency.
Normocytic Anemia
Anemia with normal-sized red blood cells but insufficient numbers.
Hemolytic Anemia
Anemia caused by the destruction of red blood cells at a faster rate than they can be produced.
Iron Deficiency Anemia
A type of anemia resulting from insufficient iron to produce hemoglobin.
Ferritin
A protein complex that stores iron in the body, mainly in the liver and bone marrow.
Transferrin
A protein that transports iron throughout the bloodstream.
Hyperbilirubinemia
An excess of bilirubin in the bloodstream, often leading to jaundice.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids
Essential fatty acids that must be obtained through diet, significant for overall health.
Anemia of Chronic Blood Loss
A gradual loss of blood, often leading to iron deficiency anemia.
