Doppler Effect
change in frequency caused by the motion of a sound source, receiver, or reflector

When does the doppler effect occur?
when the source or receiver or both are moving relative to each other.

As the frequency comes toward you it has a
higher pitch

As frequency goes away from us, it has a
lower pitch

The higher the frequency the _____ the wavelength
closer the waves

What is faster, light or sound
light

Supersonic
faster than the speed of sound

red shift and blue shift
red shift: when wavelengths separate, blue shift: when wavelengths shorten

Frequency
The number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time

Pitch
a tone's experienced highness or lowness; depends on frequency

loudness
A sensory characteristic of sound produced by the amplitude (intensity) of the sound wave

decibel
a unit that compares the intensities of different sounds

mechanical wave
A wave that requires a medium through which to travel

electromagnetic waves
A form of energy that can move through the vacuum of space.

Hertz
Unit of frequency

crest
Highest point of a wave

Trough
Lowest point of a wave

Wavelength
The distance between two corresponding parts of a wave

speed of sound
340 m/s

longitudinal wave
A wave in which the vibration of the medium is parallel to the direction the wave travels

Compression
The part of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are close together.
rarefaction
a part in a longitudinal wave where the particles are spread apart
Reflection
The bouncing back of a wave when it hits a surface through which it cannot pass.

Absorption
to take in or transfer energy to a medium
Transmission
the passage of light through an object
low frequency
long wavelength, low energy
objects that refract
water, lenses, prisms, microscope, telescope, magnifying glass, hand lens

Direct Relationship
a relationship in which one variable increases with an increase in another variable

Indirect Relationship
a relationship when one variable increases while the other variable decreases

high frequency
short wavelength, high energy
