What is a Systems Administrator responsible for?
Providing technical support to employees for internal systems and infrastructure, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of computer hardware, software, telecommunications systems, and security.
What are the components of a system?
Computer hardware and software support, network hardware, software, and support, shared resources, and non-physical components including users and user groups.
What devices are included in computer hardware support?
Servers, desktops, laptops, and mobile devices like iPads, iPhones, Blackberry devices, iPods, and Android devices.
What roles do routers and switches play in a network?
Routers connect different networks, while switches connect devices within the same network.
How does network size affect system administration responsibilities?
In small networks(<100 users), a single individual manages all responsibilities; in medium networks (100-250 users), responsibilities are shared; and in large networks (>250 users), specialists are employed for various functions.
What are key responsibilities of a System Administrator?
Account provisioning, hardware maintenance, system backups, software installation and maintenance, system monitoring and security, and troubleshooting.
Name three types of Operating Systems (OS).
Linux, UNIX, and Windows.
What are some examples of Linux distributions?
Debian, Red Hat (Fedora), Ubuntu, and Cygwin.
What are the features of command line-based systems?
Automation possible through scripting and the use of configuration files.
What text editors are commonly used for writing scripts?
Notepad and Vi Nano.
What can be managed using scripts in system administration?
Software installations, configurations, repairs, and removals.
Why is network size a crucial factor in system administration planning?
Network size dictates the staffing needs, complexity of infrastructure, range of specialized roles required, and the overall scope of system administration responsibilities.
