Anaphora

When a certain word or phrase is repeated at the beginning of clauses or sentences that follow each other

Hyperbole

An exaggeration of ideas for the sake of emphasis

Imagery

descriptive language used to create word pictures

Juxtaposition

Placing two concepts, characters, ideas, or places near or next to each other so that the reader will compare and contrast them

Metaphor

A figure of speech comparing one thing to another without using like or as; one thing is said to be another

Personification

A type of figurative language in which a non-human subject is given human characteristics

Simile

A figure of speech where like and as are used to make a comparison between two unlike ideas

Symbol

Something that has its own meaning but that stands for or represents something else

Tone

The writer's attitude toward his/her audience or subject
