Negotiation has a role to play in three acts:

1. The prologue
2. During the conflict
3. In the crisis

What role does negotiation have in the prologue of a conflict?

The conflict is merely an issue or a problem, to prevent it from getting worse

What role does negotiation have during a conflict?

If negotiation in the prologue has failed, it provide solutions and resolutions

What role does negotiation have in a crisis?

If negotiation during prologue and conflict has failed, it brings the escalation and violence to an end

Conflict (definition)

incompatibility of positions, a static situation when mutually exclusive views are present. Often relates to politico-security issues

Escalation (definition)

A dynamic conflict, an effort to prevail in a contest between those incompatible positions. (When one party increases its efforts, others may do so as well)

Negotiation (definition)

the process of combining divergent/conflicting positions through communication into a joint decision → giving something to get something.

What is a mediator’s main motive?

Self-interest
