Chemical Reaction
A process involving a change in the energy of reactants and products.
Exothermic Reaction
A reaction that releases heat energy and increases the temperature of the reaction mixture.
Endothermic Reaction
A reaction that absorbs heat energy and decreases the temperature of the reaction mixture.
Heat of Reaction (∆H)
The overall change in energy during a chemical reaction, calculated as energy taken in minus energy given out.
Energy of Activation (EA)
The minimum amount of energy required for a chemical reaction to occur.
Fossil Fuels
Natural fuels such as coal and natural gas that are derived from the decomposed remains of ancient plants and animals.
Hydrogen Fuel Cell
An electrochemical cell that converts chemical energy from hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, while producing water as the only byproduct.
Photosynthesis
An endothermic reaction in which plants convert carbon dioxide and water into glucose and oxygen using sunlight.
Thermal Decomposition
A chemical decomposition caused by heat, breaking down a compound into simpler substances.
Comparing Fuels
A method to evaluate the performance of different fuels under controlled conditions.
