-it’s the absence of tension
-it’s rest, nourishment, and cycles of movement
Blood (Patterns)
inappropriate presence of tension: restless, tightness, jumpy
-may be preceded by loss of Blood, insufficient SP Qi to produce new Blood or Congealed Blood that prevents new blood from forming
Blood Deficiency
dizzy or sensation of instability
thin, emaciated body
spots in visual field or impaired vision
poor memory
weak tremors
tightness/cramps
numbness in limbs
dry skin/hair
scanty menses or amenorrhea

Tongue: pale
Pulse: thin
Blood Deficiency **occurs in Liver, Heart & Spleen
low grade fever
5 palm heat
dry throat at night
night sweats
emaciation
dry skin/hair
withered nails
Tongue: dry coat with red peeled body
Pulse: thready
Yin Deficiency **occurs in Kidney, LU, HT, LV, ST
fixed/stabbing severe pain due to congealed blood
tumors/lumps/hard immobile masses
inability to feel safe, suspicious, terror or paranoia
sharp pain that’s localized & worse with pressure
more severe at night
frequent hemorrhages with dark clots
purple twinge or blue/yellow bruising
cyanosis in lips/nails
dark complexion
dry scaly skin
lusterless hair
Tongue: dark purple with petechiae
Pulse: choppy
Blood Stasis
this condition may be preceded by trauma/abuse, hemorrhage, Qi Deficiency/Stagnation, or Cold patterns, and Blood Heat
Blood Stasis
-can be due to excessive emotions, alcohol intake and invasion of exogenous pathogens. It’s a major symptom of Excess/Heat pattern
Blood Heat
(bleeding)
if heat affects the blood, it’s reckless and generated by Heat EPF that invades deep inside the body, agitating blood
this is hot blood
blood in sputum, vomit, urine, feces
epistaxis
excess menses
red skin eruptions
thirst
dry mouth
irritability
rapid pulse
delirium in extreme cases
Blood Heat
can occur from Blood Stasis and Yin Deficiency, but usually due to Qi Deficiency unable to hold Blood or because Blood Heat (Excess) pushes blood out of the vessels
Hemorrhage (blood loss)
what is special about Qi & Blood?
they inter promote one another for existence and functioning therefore, when there’s an invasion of disease, they influence one another.
emotional frustration (dysfunct. of liver Qi)
fullness
distention & migratory pains in chest/hypochondria
irritability accompanied by masses
sharp pain
tenderness
amenorrhea
dysmenorrhea
or dark purple menses w clots
Tongue: dark pule with petechiae
Pulse: choppy
Qi and Blood Syndromes: specifically Qi & Blood Stagnation
may be due to prolonged illness and failure of deficient Qi to produce Blood or vice versa
(SP, HT, LU)
Qi & Blood Deficiency description
Short of Breath unwilling to speak
fatigue
spontaneous sweat
pale/sallow complexion
palpitations
insomnia
Tongue: pale
Pulse: thready and weak
Qi and Blood Deficiency
the inability to transport blood due to Qi Deficincy
-usually caused by prolonged illness
Qi Deficiency with Blood Stasis description
pale & dark complexion
fatigue
SOB
unwilling to speak
fixed sharp pains usually in chest/hypochondria
fixed pain
Tongue: pale purple with petechiae
pulse: deep, choppy
Qi Deficiency with Blood Stasis
bleeding from failure of Deficient Qi in governing Blood
-Qi deficient from prolonged illness and Qi consumption from chronic bleeding
Qi deserting the blood description
epistaxis
vomiting blood
coughing blood
bloody stools
uterine bleeding
menorrhagia
S.O.B
fatigue
pale and lusterless complexion
Tongue: pale
Pulse: thready and weak
Qi Deserting the Blood
hypofunction of the general body or of certain Zang Fu
organs due to malnourishment of the blood
Blood Deficiency
pallor or sallow complexion, pale lips and nails, dizziness, blurring
of vision, floaters, palpitations, insomnia, numbness of the limbs,
scanty or delayed menstruation, or amenorrhea, T: pale, P: thready
and weak
Treatment Principle: nourish Blood
blood deficiency description
retention of blood in the body, or in the meridians, and
vessels of Zang Fu organs b/c hindrance of blood circulation
blood stagnation description
sharp pain, swelling or abdominal masses, reduced menstrual flow
with blood clots/amenorrhea, ecchymosis, cyanosis of the lips and
nails
T: purple with petechiae, positive SLV;
P: choppy
Treatment Principle: activate Blood circulation to remove stagnation
Blood Stagnation
heat in the blood
resulting from invasion of EPF or heat retention in the blood system
mental restlessness or mania, coma, dry mouth with no desire to
drink, feverishness severe at night,
T: crimson
P: rapid
-epistaxis, hematemesis, hematuria, bloody stools, uterine bleeding, and macular eruption
Treatment Principle: clear away Heat and cool Blood
retention of Cold in Blood stagnating Qi and slowing blood circulation
Cold in the Blood
pain mostly occurring in hands, feet, or lower ab that can be
relieved by warmth
cold limbs
delayed menstruation
purple menstrual flow with clots
T: pale body with white coat
P: slow, deep, rough
Treatment Principle: warm Meridians and activate blood circulation
Cold in Blood
pallor or sallow complexion, short breath, disinclination
to speak, lassitude, weakness, spontaneous sweating,
emaciation, palpitations, insomnia, pale lips and nails,
T: pale P: thready and weak
Treatment Principle: reinforce Qi and Blood
Deficiency of Qi & Blood
hemorrhage of blood caused by
weakness of Qi in controlling blood
Clinical Manifestation: pallor, SOB, disinclination to speak, lassitude,
