Exercise Physiology
A basic and applied science that describes, explains, and uses the body’s response to exercise and adaptations to exercise training to maximize human physical potential.
Kinetic Chain
A combination of successively arranged joints constituting a complex motor unit where movement at one joint affects movement at another.
Open Kinetic Chain (OKC)
A type of kinetic chain where the distal segment is not fixed, allowing for better isolation of a target group.
Closed Kinetic Chain (CKC)
A type of kinetic chain where the distal segment is fixed and usually involves multiple joint movements.
Core Muscles
Muscles primarily involved in stabilizing the trunk and protecting the spine, including transversus abdominis, multifidus, and rectus abdominis.
Balance
The even distribution of weight allowing someone to remain upright and steady.
Proprioception
The perception or awareness of the position or movement of the body, which can be static or dynamic.
Aerobic Exercise
Exercise that refers to the use of oxygen to meet energy demands during activity, sustaining for long periods.
Anaerobic Exercise
Exercise that does not require oxygen for energy production, characterized by shorter bursts of activity.
Heart Rate Reserve (HRR)
The difference between a person's maximum heart rate and their resting heart rate.
Karvonen Formula
A method to calculate training heart rate based on heart rate reserve and intensity.
Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE)
A scale used to measure the intensity of exercise based on personal perception of exertion.
Wound Healing Stages
The four stages include hemostasis, inflammatory phase, proliferative phase, and maturation/remodeling.
Energy Conservation
A balance between work, rest, and leisure aimed at optimizing energy expenditure in daily activities.
Fatigue
A lack of physical and/or mental energy that impacts various aspects of life including work and rehabilitation.
Functional Exercises
Exercises designed to improve balance, proprioception, and return to normal function post-injury.
