Student Safety Contract
Two copies are provided: one signed by student and parent/guardian before participation; the second kept in the science notebook as a reminder of safety rules.
Goggles
Mandatory eye protection whenever chemicals, heat, or glassware are used.
Lab Apron
Protective clothing worn during laboratory activities.
Closed-Toe Shoes
Foot protection; sandals are not allowed in the lab.
Fume Hood
Ventilated enclosure used for volatile substances or poisonous vapors; never place your head inside.
Well-Ventilated Area
Workspaces should be ventilated; use the fume hood when handling volatile or poisonous vapors.
Safety Equipment Locations
Know where the first aid kit, eyewash station, safety shower, fire extinguisher, and fire blanket are located, and know the exits.
Read Procedures Thoroughly
Read all procedures before entering the laboratory to be prepared.
No Eating or Drinking in Lab
Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory; do not use lab glassware for food or beverages.
No Horseplay
Horseplay, practical jokes, and pranks are dangerous and prohibited.
Waste Disposal
Dispose of chemical waste in proper containers; sinks used only for water or designated solutions; check container labels twice before adding waste.
Hand Washing
Wash hands with soap and water after all experiments; work surfaces and equipment cleaned after each lab.
Assigned Laboratory Station
Experiments must be conducted at a designated station; do not wander or distract others.
Sharp Instruments Handling
Carry knives and sharp tools with tips down and away; grasp by handles; cut away from your body.
Medical Condition Notification
If you have allergies or medical conditions, consult your physician before working in the lab.
Contact Lenses Policy
Wearing contact lenses in the lab is not allowed unless you have instructor permission.
Mouth Suction to Fill Pipet
Never use mouth suction to fill a pipet; use a rubber bulb or pipet pump.
Transferring Reagents Safely
Hold containers away from your body when transferring reagents.
Acids Handling
Acids must be handled with care; add acid to water, swirl, and be mindful of heat, especially with sulfuric acid.
Flammable Liquids Handling
Handle flammable hazardous liquids over a pan to contain spills; keep them away from open flames or heat sources.
Glassware Lubrication
Lubricate glassware (tubing, thermometers, etc.) before inserting into stoppers; protect hands when inserting/removing; if stuck, ask the instructor.
Broken Glass Cleanup
Never handle broken glass with bare hands; use a brush and dustpan; place broken glass in the designated disposal container.
Inspect Glassware Before Use
Examine glassware for chips or cracks and avoid using dirty glassware.
Heated Container Safety
Do not look into heated containers; hot glass remains dangerously hot and should be cooled on an insulating pad.
Do Not Look into Heated Container
Do not look into containers being heated; use proper tools to handle hot items.
Electrical Safety (General)
When removing plugs, grasp the plug not the cord; dry hands before touching switches or outlets.
Wash Bottles Use
Fill wash bottles only with distilled water and use them for rinsing glassware or adding water as intended.
OSHA Safety Pictograms
Standard symbols on chemical labels to convey hazards under OSHA Hazard Communication Standard.
Health Hazard Pictogram
Indicates hazards such as carcinogens, mutagens, reproductive toxicity, respiratory sensitizers, and other chronic hazards.
Flame Pictogram
Indicates flammable substances; includes pyrophorics and self-heating materials.
Exclamation Mark Pictogram
Indicates irritants, skin sensitizers, acute toxicity, narcotic effects, or respiratory tract irritation.
Gas Cylinder Pictogram
Indicates gases stored under pressure.
Corrosion Pictogram
Indicates skin/eye corrosion or burns and corrosion to metals.
Exploding Bomb Pictogram
Indicates explosives, self-reactives, or organic peroxides.
Flame Over Circle Pictogram
Indicates oxidizers.
Environment Pictogram
Indicates hazards to the environment, particularly aquatic toxicity.
Skull and Crossbones Pictogram
Indicates acute toxicity (fatal or toxic).
