Relational thinking
The ability to recognise that the equals sign implies a relationship between both sides that means 'the same as'.
Number sentence
An equation expressed using numbers and operators such as +, -, X and ÷.
Equals sign (=)
Indicates that the value on the left of the sign is the same value as on the right.
Not equals sign (≠)
Indicates that the value on the left of the sign is not the same value as on the right.
Equivalent number sentences
Both sides of an equals sign will have the same total value even when different numbers and operators are being used.
Operation in maths
A mathematical process used to solve problems.
Four basic operations in maths
Addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division.
Commutative law
The order of the numbers in an addition and multiplication calculation can change without affecting the result. E.g. 8+5=5+8.
Associative law
How we group numbers in addition or multiplication can change without affecting the result. E.g. (7+3)+4=7+(3+4).
