What are the four categories of social interactions?
Mutual benefit, selfishness, altruism, and spite.
What is inclusive fitness?
The concept that an individual's genetic success is derived from both direct reproduction and the support of related individuals.
What is eusociality?
A social structure characterized by cooperative brood care, overlapping generations, and specialized castes.
What hypothesis has been abandoned for explaining eusociality in Hymenoptera?
The haplodiploidy hypothesis.
What is the biological species concept?
Defines species based on reproductive isolation and the ability to interbreed.
What are prezygotic isolating barriers?
Barriers that occur before fertilization, preventing mating or fertilization.
Give an example of temporal isolation.
Temporal isolation in pink salmon, where mating occurs at different times.
What is allopatric speciation?
Speciation that occurs when populations are geographically isolated.
What is reinforcement selection?
The process by which natural selection reinforces reproductive barriers to reduce hybridization.
Provide an example of reinforcement selection in Hyla cinerea.
Patterns and experiments demonstrate mating preferences that reduce interbreeding between different species.
